# Can someone show me the steps they take to solve this math question?

A taxi cab charges \$0.80 for the first 1/5 of a mile and \$0.10 for each additional 1/10

of a mile. What is the cost of a 3 mile trip?

1/5=2/10 so with the first mile we have 8/10 left.

10 cents = 1/10 of a mile so 1 mile is \$1.00.

So 8 (from the first mile) x .10 = .80

so the first mile is .80+.80=1.60

The next two miles are each \$1.00

\$1.00x2=\$2.00

\$2.00+\$1.60=\$3.60

= \$0.80 + \$0.10(28)

= \$0.80 + \$2.80

= \$3.60

convert the denominator of 1/5 to 10 which would make it 2/10. That would be .80 cents. then there's another 80 cents and you have 1 mile. and 1.00 for every other mile, so youre total would be 3.60.

The next 8/10 would cost \$.80.

The first mile would cost you a total of \$1.60.

Now that each additional 1/10 costs .10 you can conclude that it costs 1.00 per mile.

First mile costs 1.60

Second mile costs 1.00

so the flag pull [start moving] costs 60 cents -- that's 80 cents minus the 20 cents for the first 2/10th mile you don't get charged for

and miles cost 1 dollar per mile [to the nearest 1/10th mile] -- 10 cents divided by 1/10 mile
