The common name for Sirius is The Dog Star.
They call it "The Dog Star."
I understand that that is supposed to be because Dogs in some regions like to bark at it.
Sirius is the brightes star on Earth's night sky.
It is officially called Alpha Canis Majoris because it is the brightes star (thus, Alpha) in the constellation Canis Major ("Greater Dog"). This is why Sirius is also called the "Dog Star".
"Sirius" comes from Greek "Seirios ("glowing" or "scorcher").
