Question

Somebody help me solve these math problems?!?

It says I have to set up an equation then solve the problem..I need help with these 2 questions:

1. One number is 3 more than twice a second number. Their sum is 27. Find the numbers.

2. Mary collects ceramic and stuffed frogs. She presently has 422 frogs. She wishes to add 6 a week to her collection until her collection reaches a total of 500 frogs. How long will it take Mary's frog collection to reach 500 frogs?

Answer

QUESTION 1

------------------------------

formula 1

x = 3 + 2y

formula 2

x + y =27

combine the 2

(3 + 2y) + y = 27

24 = 3y

y = 8

use the y value in the original formula

x = 3 + 2y

x = 3 + 2(8)

x = 19

-------------------------------

QUESTION 2

-------------------------------

422 + x = 500

x = 78

78 / 6 = 13 weeks
