Japan was on the allied side in World War I but I don't know if they took part in any military operation that was significant. If there were German forces on their Island possessions in the Pacific region Japan might have engaged them.
Japan did acquire the German Pacific Islands (Truk, Saipan, Tinian, etc.) via a League of Nations mandate post World War I. Germany had acquired these by purchasing them from Spain, which was bankrupt after the Spanish-American War.
