Question

How did the 3/5 compromise in the Constitution benefit the new country?

What were the benefits and detriments of this rule?

Answers

Without that compromise, there wouldn't BE a new country.

The North wanted slaves counted for tax purposes but not for representation in Congress. The South wanted the opposite. The compromise limited the population of the South and thus the number of representatives in the House. (North liked that.) The compromise also limited the amount of tax per person (direct tax) that could be levied. (South liked that, as it lowered the amount each household would be responsible for.)
